RASMUSSEN: EUROPE LOOKS FOR A CONFIDENT SPAIN

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen today accused the Spanish People’s Party of being backward-looking, of playing on people’s fears, and trying to undermine solidarity between the peoples of Spain.

Rasmussen said “There is now a clear choice between the new people’s Spain or an old conservative Spain of fear and doubt. A choice in Spain between a confident country and a frightened country. José Luis Zapatero expresses confidence in Spain’s future, the confidence that Spain will play an important role in Europe and the world, the confidence in a fair society. Under Zapatero Spain has been an inspiration for new jobs, for integration, for equality. Rajoy is a man who is relying more and more on populism and fear, on trying to divide migrants from the rest of the country, on undermining integration.”

“The Spain that Europe needs, that the world needs, is the confident, forward-looking Spain. The Spain that invests in its young people, the Spain that stands for equality between women and men, that stands for giving everyone an equal chance, that has fair rules applying equally to all people, that is investing in new, green jobs.”

He added “European social democrats I stand right behind PSOE’s confident and calm approach.”
